Seniors blessed at final school year Mass and begin service projects

During the final Mass of the school year, seniors received blessings from the school community, which sent them forth on their week-long service projects, celebrating their final Mayfield work as acts of “love, courage and kindness” to those beyond the Bellefontaine gates.
In the lead-up to their June 2 graduation, every senior has selected a church, school or community-based non-profit organization to perform volunteer hours. This year seniors will be working at 32 sites across the region, including a variety of Los Angeles public elementary schools, Dolores Mission School, Homeboy Industries, three senior citizen centers, Huntington Hospital and South Central LAMP, among other organizations.

The Campus Ministry team chose the theme “Guiding Your Way” for their last Mass. They presented the symbol of a dove at the altar to represent the seniors’ departure from Mayfield and prayed that the Holy Spirit will guide them on their new life journey.

“May our Holy Child education and mission impel us to use what we have learned and be the change in our world today, one step at a time,” said Halle Villabolos ’20, who introduced the theme.

In his homily, celebrant Fr. Marlon Mateo encouraged students to think about the strong bonds of friendship between Jesus and his disciples. Likewise, he encouraged the seniors to embrace the bonds of friendships they have built at Mayfield.

“The beauty of friendship is awesome,” Fr. Marlon said. “Take care of your friendships, take care of your relationships. Christ valued his friendships. So you, too, pray for your friends, pray with your friends.”

Amen!
