Final cheers and accolades for Cub athletes as they commit to college teams

In celebration of their skill, leadership, and sportsmanship, four Mayfield athletes announced they have committed to playing sports at the collegiate level during a signing ceremony marked by one last round of raucous cheers from their Cub friends and family.
Three Volleyball Cubs—Maeve Davitt ’19, Catie Sanchez ’19 and Charlotte Pizante ’19—all instrumental in leading Mayfield to our first Prep League Championship in five years, will continue playing on a college court. Sophia Alvarez ’19, a member of the Prep League Championship Track & Field team, will also continue on in college as a shot putter.

“These athletes all exemplify what it means to be a Mayfield Cub,” said Athletic Director Steve Bergen. “Their athleticism, determination and spirit will be missed here at Mayfield, but certainly be a credit to their new college teams.”

Congratulations and high-fives to:

Maeve Davitt ’19: Volleyball, Santa Clara University, California
Maeve distinguished herself not only on the court in the key libero position, but as a leader serving as Varsity team captain and co-chair of the Athletic Leadership Council. In the most tension-packed moments of games, Maeve remains cool, focused and skilled, said Athletic Director Steve Bergen.

A few of her extensive accolades include:
  • Varsity Volleyball Best Defensive Player
  • Varsity Volleyball Coaches’ Award
  • Varsity Volleyball First Team All League
What has Cubs Athletics meant to you?
“Mayfield athletics has been an integral part of my high school experience and has played a large role in shaping who I am today. I have truly learned how to work together as a team. The friendships I have made playing sports at Mayfield will forever have an impact on my life. From Soccer Sleepovers and Alumnae games to Volleyball tournaments in Arizona, these teams have become like families to me...The athletic department is truly amazing, encouraging us to the best we can be on and off the court.”

Why do you want to pursue this sport in college:
“The fact that I have had such an amazing athletic experience the last four years makes me want to continue at a higher level...I am so grateful that I have the opportunity continue my passion! What better setting than on the beach playing beach volleyball!”

Catie Sanchez ’19: Volleyball, Bates College, Maine

Catie epitomizes the definition of team player and her skills on the court as an outside hitter were vital to the strength of the Cubs Varsity team. Mr. Bergen described her as “the heart of the team,” a player whose infectious energy fueled team spirit and energized teammates to perform at their highest level. Catie’s leadership off the court extended to her role as co-chair of the Athletic Leadership Council. Eager to improve her athleticism and competitive spirit, Catie also played on Cub Varsity Water Polo and Swim team.

Several of her many sports accolades include:
  • Varsity Volleyball First Team All League
  • Varsity Coaches’ Award
  • Varsity Captain
What has Cubs Athletics meant to you?
“Mayfield Athletics has helped me form some of the greatest friendships I have today. As an underclassman, I loved looking up to and meeting older girls. As a junior and senior, I loved moving into a leadership position and setting an example for younger girls. I absolutely love being a part of such a large program like volleyball that is consistently growing and doing better in league each year! Cubs Athletics forms strong bonds that will always have a special place in my heart!”

Why do you want to pursue volleyball in college?
“Having the opportunity to study and meet people at an amazing place like Bates is great, but having the chance to also play volleyball makes it all that much more of a perfect dream! I couldn't be more excited to go to Bates and meet my teammates in the fall. I love the balance of Division 3 Athletics that allows me to focus on my academics, pursue my sport competitively, and also have time to do the other things I love!”

Charlotte Pizante ’19: Volleyball, Emerson College
Charlotte joined the Varsity team her Junior year and her quiet power and dedication to practice and strengthen her game and jump high contributed mightily to the success of the team. She improved exponentially between her junior and senior year and was a player that could be counted on, Mr. Bergen said.

Accolades include:
  • Second Team, All League
  • Team MVP
  • Most Improved Player
What has Cubs Athletics meant to you?
“Athletics has been a part of my life for the past three years and I feel like the gym is my second home. It has given me another family in a way, with all of my teammates and coaches.”

Why do you want to pursue volleyball in college?
“I have been playing volleyball since seventh grade and I honestly can't picture myself not playing anymore. I am also so excited to meet new teammates and play other colleges that my friends attend near me!”

Sophia Alvarez ’19: shot put, Lewis and Clark University
Sophia discovered she had impressive skills with the shot put when she joined the Track & Field Cubs her junior year. Her concentration, discipline and powerful “put,” pushing not throwing a spherical weight from the shoulder, added depth to a Cub team mainly know for distance running. Sophia was a strong contributor and part of our field event athletes who are making significant stride is the specialities. Mr. Bergen noted that she is typically the first player at practice and is always willing to lend a hand to others. Sophia is a true scholar-athlete and her passion for writing and reading, her intellect and critical thinking skills will take her far in college and beyond!
