Congrats to Cubs for an unforgettable spring season!
What a day we had on Tuesday! In the biggest team sporting event in many years, the Cubs hosted Westridge at Brookside Field in the CIF Semifinal softball game. The league rivals had split their two games during the year and the winner of the rubber match would advance to the CIF Championship game for the first time in either school's history.
The atmosphere was unlike anything softball fans have ever seen at a Mayfield softball game. More than 400 Cubs fans cheered on the team. Festivities included hot dogs on the BBQ, great music, commemorative game t-shirts, and so much pride and excitement.
Mayfield fell down early 1-0 and by the bottom of the last inning actually trailed the Tigers 6-0. However, Coach Katie Clancy’s team showed their resolve and never-quit attitude by scoring four runs in the last inning and actually loading the bases before falling just short. The season ended for the Cubs on Tuesday, but the memories of their stellar CIF run and the day’s events will fuel our spirit for a long time. We even had two Cubs selected to the San Gabriel Valley All Star team. This Monday, pitcher Jaylin Domingo ’19 and shortstop Alyssa Romo ’19 will represent the Cubs in the area All-Star game—quite an honor for the girls who will represent us well!

Not to be outdone, the Track & Field team had the best finish at last week's CIF Championships in Torrance. Led, once again, by Audrey Suarez ’21, the Cubs placed fifth at the meet. Suarez was runner-up in the 1600 to her friend and training partner from Village Christian. Then in the 800, Audrey broke her own school record, and won her first ever CIF Championship. Her winning time in the Division 4 race was actually the fastest time in Divisions 1, 2, and 3 as well! For her efforts, Audrey is invited to participate in tomorrow's CIF Masters Meet back at El Camino College. She will be running the 800 and 1600 tomorrow afternoon and if she is able to finish in the top six of either event, she will have an opportunity to go back to the California State Championships next weekend in Clovis, where she placed fifth in the 1600 last year! Audrey is running at her lifetime best, so stay tuned... she has a few more special races coming up!
Jolie Beegle ’21 joined Audrey at the Finals meet, placing in the top six in both the pole vault, triple jump, and long jump! An amazing individual performance. Mia Koga ’20 was seventh in the pole vault. The 4 x 400 relay team of Suarez, Beegle, Laura Arcia ’19, and Sarah Tupy ’21 placed eighth.
It has been an unforgettable spring sports season and with Audrey’s races coming up it doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon. The athletes and I sincerely thank the Booster Club and all of you for your support this year. The 2018-2019 school year has certainly been special, and we can't wait to get started in the summer to make 2019-2020 even better.
