Two spring sports teams are on the verge of making history!

An epic softball match-up will unfold next week when the Cubs, fresh from a massive quarterfinal playoff win, take on our cross-Orange Grove rivals, the Westridge Tigers. Meanwhile, Track & Field Cubs continue their stunning domination as they head to CIF Finals.
On Thursday the No. 3-ranked Cubs Softball team traveled to Apple Valley to take on the Academy for Academic Excellence in a CIF Quarterfinal match-up. The Cubs have only advanced this far once in nearly 20 years, during the 2011 senior season of Coach Katie Clancy ’11. When the Apple Valley Knights led 3-0 after the first inning, it looked like the game might end the way it did for Coach Clancy—with a tough loss. But the Cubs scored one run in the second and 20 more runs over the next four innings, cruising to a 21-8 victory on the road. The Cubs were led by Julia Domingo '21, with two home runs, and Maddie Biscaichipy '19, with a home run, two doubles and five RBI's.

The Cubs now advance to a place they have only been once before in school historythe CIF Semifinals. Believe it or not, Mayfield will host our rivals, Westridge, in a home game at Brookside on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. The Cubs and Tigers split their two games this season, so Tuesday's game will be one for the books. Neither school has ever advanced to the CIF Championship game, so it is safe to say that this is the biggest game in school history.

Softball isn't the only team making history. The Track & Field team had a stunning performance at the CIF Prelims last week. Audrey Suarez ’21 continued her dominating year, winning the 800m and 1600m runs. Her classmate Jolie Beegle ’21 showed that she is arguably the most dynamic athlete Mayfield has produced in years. She qualified for this Saturday's CIF Finals in the long jump, triple jump, pole vault, and 4 x 400 relay in which she teamed with Suarez, Laura Arcia ’19, and Sarah Tupy ’21 to qualify fourth. Mia Koga ’20 also qualified in the pole vault (after placing 4th at the meet in 2018). All in all, the Cubs will be very well represented at the championship meet on Saturday. The #4 ranked Cubs will be battling for the school's first-ever CIF Championship in Track & Field.

Our badminton team saw its season come to an end with their loss to Baldwin Park on Monday in the 1st round of the CIF Division 2 playoffs. The future is very bright for the young team and the experience on the road in the playoffs will undoubtedly serve the Cubs well.

We hope to see lots of Cubs fans at El Camino College this Saturday for the Track & Field Finals and at Brookside Park for the CIF softball semifinals on Tuesday. The girls are doing amazing things on the athletic field and it gives them such a boost to have your support. If you can't make it, follow along at home with real-time updates on Twitter!

Lastly, we will honor all of our spring sports and the equestrian team this Wednesday at our banquet. Please make sure you RSVP by TODAY (Friday) and we will see you at 6:00 pm.

Go Cubs!
