Mother’s day Mass and Brunch: “I look up to all of you,’ Mayfield student tells moms
When alumna Ann Kennedy ’87 reflects on her Mayfield years, she attributes “so much of the woman I have become” to her education and experiences at 500 Bellefontaine. Her daughter, Samantha Kennedy ’20, says that her own high school years are giving her valuable tools “to be a faith-filled, bubbly, hard-working young woman.”
Their bond, admiration and love for each other typified the sentiments expressed by so many at our annual Mother-Daughter Mass and Brunch, a lovely Mayfield tradition held on campus the Sunday before the often busy “official” Mother’s Day.
Our Campus Ministry Council chose the Mass theme of “Trust,” celebrating the value of trust in students’ relationship with God, with other members of the Mayfield community and with their mothers.
“I want to thank all the mothers who are here today for entrusting your incredible daughters to us,” said Head of School Kate Morin, speaking to the crowd of more than 300. “The women they will become, women who are joyful, loving, smart, and dedicated, is because of you and the role models that you are.”
During her reflection, Ann asked the mothers to think about the “whole child” that their daughter is becoming.
“It’s easy to point to the academic achievements that our daughters accomplish every day as a result of their Mayfield education, but how do you measure the value of their social growth?” she said. “Her high school successes will not be measured solely on her GPA and SAT scores or the college she attends, but rather on the person she becomes and the relationships she fosters.”
Samantha said she feels she can move confidently on her life journey ahead because of the Mayfield mothers and friends who have gone before her.
“I look up to all of you,” she said, adding that she knows she will always have two homes, one nurtured by her mother and one found at Mayfield. “Home is where love resides, memories are created, friends and families belong, and laughter never ends. And we have our beautiful, strong, generous and caring mothers to thank for that.”
