Head's Weekly Message — April 5, 2019

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

I hope you and your families had a most wonderful spring break. Skip and I spent our vacation visiting friends and travelling around South West England. We connected with loved ones, hiked some beautiful coastal paths, and took in lovely historical sights—all with flawless weather. It was a great trip.

Returning to school, we all jumped into a very busy week! Last night’s beautiful Junior Ring Ceremony was a highlight. The theme of the inspirational liturgy, celebrated by our dear friend Msgr. Clem Connolly, was “United in Love.” The Mayfield Senior School Class of 2020 exemplifies this concept in deep ways—each girl bringing her own special gifts to create a sisterhood of kindness, creativity, and joy. These girls are going to make great seniors!

Tonight will be another special evening. I’m so looking forward to greeting our upperclass women all dressed up for our much-anticipated Junior-Senior Prom. The prom committee has worked very hard to create a “Belle Nuit” for all. Please remember that school will dismiss at 12:45 this afternoon to allow our girls time to prepare. Parents of prom attendees—please make sure to have that talk with your daughters to make sure you are clear on all the pre- and post-prom arrangements. That way we can ensure that it will truly be a “beautiful night” for everyone.

Saturday is going to be another exciting day. In the morning we will be hosting our annual alumnae Homecoming with Mass and brunch. I’m very excited to welcome so many of our alumnae home to Strub Hall and especially to honor Mary Wickman ’69 with the 2019 Cornelian Award. Mary exemplifies our Holy Child motto of “Actions Not Words” through her amazing career as a nurse and educator. She gives tirelessly of herself to her family and community—such an incredible role model for us all! Then, in the afternoon I will be flying to Chicago to join the members of our Women’s Vocal Ensemble, who will be competing in the national Festival of Gold choir competition. I know our singers are going to make us all very proud when they impress the judges with their incredible grace, skill, and musicality!

As we speed towards the end of the school year I want to make you aware of a change that we have made to our final week of school. In order to create a more inclusive and joy-filled closing we have decided to eliminate awards night and instead have a very special last day of school.

On the morning of Friday, May 31 all students will be expected to attend an assembly at which class awards will be presented. The assembly will conclude with the unveiling and distribution of our amazing yearbook, Crossroads. free celebratory lunch for all our students, faculty, and staff will follow. The major Senior Awards will be presented at the end of our Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday, June 1, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Finally—I need to ask for everyone’s help in making sure that we respect our Bellefontaine neighbors. We have promised our neighbors that parents will not pick up or drop off students on the street—so please always drive on to campus to pick up or drop off your daughters. The girls have been told that they will receive a detention if this rule is violated. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
