Track & Field dominates in opening meets; Softball victorious over Westridge

Spring athletes love daylight savings! With the longer afternoons, softball, swim/dive, and track/field athletes get to bask in the sun during the gorgeous afternoons.
This week our Cubs began Prep League play across the board. Once again we were led by our fantastic Track & Field team. Led by athletes from the Class of 2021, Jolie Beegle, Sarah Tupy, and Audrey Suarez, the Cubs dominated the competition at the second Prep League cluster meet this past Monday at John Burroughs High School in Burbank.

Jolie broke the school record in the triple jump and won the pole vault. Sarah won the 300 hurdles, and Audrey continued her dominance in the distance events by cruising to a victory in the 800. Audrey was coming off a performance for the ages from last weekend. She won the 1600 and 800 at the Redondo Nike Invitational—one of the largest and most competitive on the West Coast. Both times placed her in the top-10 ranked times in the nation and her 800 time was a new school and meet record. Audrey Suarez was an easy selection as our Athlete of the Week. The Cubs are off until next weekend when they will compete in the Pasadena Games at South Pasadena High School.

Softball is headed up to Lake Arrowhead this weekend for a fun training trip. Earlier in the week they picked up their first league win of the year, a thrilling come from behind 5-3 victory over Westridge. Jaylin Domingo '19 pitched a terrific seven innings and Taylin Yankovich '20 picked up a key hit on the fifth inning to give the Cubs a lead they would never relinquish.

Badminton also continued league play. The Cubs fell to South Pasadena on Wednesday in their first home match, but the young team is gaining valuable experience and is showing huge improvement in just a few weeks. Swim/Dive will compete today and tomorrow in one of the largest and most competitive invitationals in the country at Mt. SAC.

Our big event next week is our annual Moms’ Bunco Night! The Pippert's will be hosting this great evening on Thursday night, March 21. If you don't know much about bunco, it is a dice game of chance...and a ton of fun. It is also a wonderful way to support our student-athletes. You don't need to be a Booster member, a parent of an athlete, or or even a current Mayfield mom. We welcome all ladies for a fun night right across the street from campus, but we only have 11 more spots available! If you are interested, please register online today.

And Dads—your Poker Night is coming next month, on April 25! In the meantime come out to a game/match/meet this week. We love having your support. See you at a game.

Go Cubs!
