Head's Weekly Message — March 1, 2019

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

Greetings from Long Beach! I’m here at the Annual Conference of the National Association of Independent Schools, attending some great presentations and hearing some wonderful speakers. Yesterday I presented a workshop providing suggestions for educators who are transitioning into their first Head of School position. I pray that they are joining a community like Mayfield into which I was welcomed with such open arms and hearts.

I was able to spend part of Wednesday with our beloved seniors on their Kairos retreat. They have been in my thoughts these last few days as I pray that their experience strengthens their faith, their relationships, and their sense of self as we all prepare for their June 2 graduation.

In the meantime—there is a lot going on as we speed towards spring break, which begins on March 23.

Next Saturday, March 9, Mayfield will be “Rocking” our annual benefit. I can’t wait to see everyone dressed up in their retro 1980s looks. There are amazing auction items to bid on (including my parking spot for a month), and we are especially hoping to raise lots of money through our paddle raise to outfit our science classrooms with new technology and continue our flexible classroom projects. So please come on out to support our girls and “Dance the Night Away!”

The following weekend, we will experience magic in Pike Auditorium as the curtain rises on our production of Into the Woods. Sondheim is one of my favorites—and this very intricately beautiful work has only been made possible by our extremely talented singers and actors. The set design and lighting are going to be amazing, too, so make your plans now to attend—March 14, 15, 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Finally—today during advisory your daughters will receive registration materials for next year. Please begin your conversations with them—really helping them reflect upon creating a balanced schedule. Our Summer Studies program is one way that we provide additional flexibility for our students. This summer we are offering full credit courses in Geometry (by departmental approval), Chemistry, Biology, and U.S. History. We are also offering a half-credit class in Fitness. Please note that families who receive financial aid during the school year will receive the same percentage off summer studies classes. Registration will open at 9:00 a.m. this coming Wednesday, March 6. Some classes will fill quickly, so please register as early as possible so as not to be disappointed.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
