Snow falls on Cub swimmers and divers, but warm accolades for winter athletes!

Spring sports kicked off with their first competitions this week, our swimmers and divers were amazingly dusted with SNOW and we honored our winter athletes. What a week!
First, a round of applause for our stellar winter sports athletes who were honored one last time at our team banquet on Wednesday. We all enjoyed a wonderful BBQ meal from the Gomez family (Trinity ’18) before splitting up by sport for individual accolades.

Then, if you were on the Mayfield campus Thursday, you experienced an anomaly. As the swimming & diving team boarded its bus for its first meet of the year against Webb in Claremont, snow was falling! While snow doesn't make for great swimsuit weather, the team performed extremely well in its early season meet.

Led by Julia Kasputis ’19, the Varsity team lost a close meet to Webb. However, Julia had her career high dual meet score to win the diving competition. Julia's score was more than double that of the runner up! On JV, the Cubs had many first-time swimmers compete well in the cold and rainy conditions. Mimi Campbell ’20, Catherine Mansour ’20, and Harrisan Smyser ’20 all came away with individual victories on the day.

Softball kicked off their season after having numerous games postponed due to rain. The Cubs competed in the San Marino Tournament on Presidents' Day. After losing in two tough games, the Cubs had their home opener on Tuesday against Ramona Convent. The Cubs fell behind 7-2 in the 4th inning, but came storming back with three runs in the bottom of the 5th and three more in the bottom of the 6th to pull out a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over the Tigers, 8-7! The Cubs are back in action in a rivalry game with FSHA this Tuesday at Brookside Field #2 at 3:30 p.m. We would love to have you out cheering on the team.

Next week the seniors will be off on their Kairos retreat. Softball and Swim/Dive will both have games on Tuesday, while other sports practice hard the rest of the week. Track & Field starts their season in the Oaks Christian Invite on Saturday, March 2.

Follow Cubs sports on Twitter all year @msscubs and make it out to a game. Soon, the weather will be beautiful to catch a game/meet/match, and the girls love to have the support!

Go Cubs!
