Cubs honor seniors; playoff announcements at hand after terrific winter sports season

As the regular season of the winter sports comes to an end this week, the Cubs have played some terrific games while honoring the Class of 2019.
The water polo Cubs had a dramatic week! The Cubs soundly defeated Brentwood on Monday (14-6) setting up a "win and they're in" match vs. Westridge on Wednesday. The Cubs dropped a close game to the Tigers (7-5) leaving the Cubs, Tigers, and La Salle Lancers in a three-way tie for the final league playoff spot. For the first time in over 20 years in any sport in the league, the three teams played a mini-playoff tournament yesterday. By virtue of winning the short straw, the Cubs got to sit out the first game as La Salle defeated Westridge. Then in the final game the Cubs poured it on and with their highest point total of the season they defeated the Lancers yesterday, 18-9, and will compete in the CIF playoffs next week. In the midst of all the hoopla, the Cubs honored seniors Chloe Kessel, Maddie Lewis, Catie Sanchez and Julia Watson, who played in their final home games of their career. Congrats team!

Basketball also finished up their season with dramatic games with Pasadena Poly and Chadwick. The JV team came away with two big wins to end their season. Led by our Athlete of the Week, Sarah Tupy '21, the varsity squad came up just short in its quest to qualify for the playoffs. The Cubs honored seniors Maddie Biscaichipy, Jaylin Domingo and Katie Tupy as they ended their basketball careers last night in the game vs. Chadwick.

The soccer teams played all over the Valley. The varsity Cubs honored nine seniors in their final game in a close loss to Westridge. The Cubs finished with an overall record of 7-7-3 and now must wait until tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. to find out of they qualified for the playoffs as an at-large team. The JV Red team (featuring four seniors) defeated Westridge 3-0 and on the same night, the JV White team defeated Hoover 2-0. Both teams played extremely well all season long. With such large numbers in the program, the future looks very bright for our soccer teams. We say goodbye to seniors Emma Abdalla, Amber Allen, Maeve Davitt, Andrea Huerta, Michaela Gallo, Caroline Ivankovich, Bella Leifer, Sara McBride, Heather Palomino, Kat Plascencia, Alexxa Riley, Sasha Torres and Elysee Vielma.

Stay tuned for playoff details at @msscubs. The CIF brackets are released this weekend and we will find out where the water polo and potential soccer games will be played.

Also, don't forget to RSVP for the Winter Sports Athletic Banquet coming up on February 20!

Lastly, spring sports begin in full next week and our spring sports parent info night is Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Please see my separate email for all the details if you want to play Badminton, Softball, Swim/Dive or Track/Field. It is going to be a great season!
