A spring season of strength, travel and new beginnings

First and foremost, we want to congratulate our amazing Athletic Trainer, Jayme Harrold, who gave birth to a very handsome 7 lb. 8 oz. boy, named Ryloe on Wednesday.  Baby, mom and dad are all doing well and are already back home! We can't wait to meet him!
This week, our teams are traveling all over the globe! Last weekend, our swim team headed up to Walnut Creek and competed against some of the best teams in the state in the De La Salle Invitational. The Cubs finished 8th overall—the best finish in school history. The highlight was Taylor Carey's ‘22 victory in the 100 breaststroke. Then, this week the team overwhelmed Maranatha on Tuesday, then clinched the Rivalry Series win this year with a 118.5-55.5 victory over FSHA. Combined with our wins in Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball —Mayfield has won five of the 8 competitions with FSHA this year, with only Track & Field remaining.  Holly Gmelich ‘23 had the highlight with a CIF Automatic time in the 200 Freestyle. The JV team also had a great win over the Tologs—the meet was tied 64-64 with three events to go and then the Cubs won all three of the final events and defeated the Tologs, 83-71.

Thursday morning, the Softball team headed south to compete in the 15th Annual Torrey Invitational, hosted by La Jolla Country Day School. The Cubs opened play yesterday with a huge 13-2 win over the host Torres, highlighted by mammoth home runs from Jamie Pernecky ‘22 and Jaz Johnson ‘25. Mayfield will continue play today with a doubleheader before finishing with a final game tomorrow. Schedule and results can be found on our athletics webpage.

As I type this, I am sitting in the International terminal at LAX waiting to board a flight to Scotland with our CIF Semifinal Soccer team. It is our fourth trip to Scotland in the past twenty years and first since 2017. We will be touring the sites, training and playing games, and otherwise having a great time over Spring Break.

Track & Field will be running in the 76th annual Pasadena Games later today at South Pasadena HS and Badminton will play one final game today at San Gabriel HS before they head off to Spring Break.

Spring Break will be great for our girls, and we hope to have a memorable month of April when we return. Should be a terrific final month of the season. GO CUBS!
