Postseason play continues for volleyball and tennis as we gear up for winter sports

After a wonderful run through the first three rounds of the CIF playoffs, the Varsity volleyball team found itself in the CIF Semifinals last Saturday on the road against a talented Chino Hills squad. The Cubs dropped the first set, then battled back and took the second set in front of a hostile crowd. Unfortunately, Mayfield lost sets three and four by two points each, ending the Cubs’ quest for their first CIF title since 2010. But it was Mayfield's best finish since 2013 and has qualified the Cubs for the California State Volleyball playoffs, which start this Tuesday. The brackets will be released on Sunday night and the Cubs will find out who their opponent will be. Their season is not quite over and next week should be very exciting.
Now it seems the baton (or racket, in this case) has been passed to Varsity tennis, who are making a run of their own this week in the CIF playoffs. On Tuesday, the Cubs defeated Mayfair 18-0 in a CIF wildcard match and then came back the very next day to eliminate a tough Mark Keppel squad, 10-8. The Cubs will now host undefeated and #6-ranked Wilson of Hacienda Heights today at Occidental at 2:00 p.m. A victory today would put the Cubs in the CIF Quarterfinals, a place they have not been since 2006. Mayfield won a share of the 2021 Prep League Championship and seems poised to keep their run going next week!

Cross country also had a big day last Saturday, hosting the 2021 Prep League Championships at Pierce College. It was a beautiful day for running and the Cubs had their best meet of the year. The Varsity team placed fourth in a tough league, led by individual runner-up Cecilia Kvochak ’23! Sophia Limongelli ’25 missed out on an all-league selection by one spot, taking 16th place overall. The JV team was also terrific, placing third in league behind their own individual runner-up, Bella Villavicencio ’25. The team's season is now complete, but Cecilia will run as an individual in the CIF Prelims one week from today at the famous Mt. SAC course. A huge thank you to all of our Mayfield families who helped us host a great meet by donating items for the hospitality area. I can't tell you how many "thanks" I received from all of the schools in our league.

It is starting to get very exciting on campus as we began full practices for our winter sports this week. Next week is our official tryout week and we will have games in less than two weeks!  Can't wait. We encourage you to visit the Cubs Christmas Store before our deadline of next Friday, Nov. 12. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year and a great way to support all of our athletes.

Have a great weekend and GO CUBS!
