Seniors on our tennis teams lead with grace, skill, joy and determination

It was a special afternoon at Occidental College yesterday as we got the chance to honor three members of our Class of 2022, Michelle Cheng ’22, Rebecca Leiva ’22 and Iris Yoo ’22. The three seniors led the Cubs tennis teams once again, this time to a 13-5 victory over Flintridge Prep on their Senior Day. Leiva was the star of the day, going 3-0 in her #1 singles matches and Cheng and Yoo also played well in their doubles matches. The seniors have led the Cubs to a stellar 13-2 record this season and will guide the team into the Prep League Championships on Wednesday before the playoffs start in a week and a half. The Cubs’ regular season is done, but we still have a chance to gain a share of the league title if Westridge beats Poly next week. No matter what happens, these seniors will have qualified for the CIF playoffs in all four of their seasons as Cubs and have led our team with grace, skill, joy and determination.

Stop me if you have heard this before, but the Varsity volleyball team continued to make history this week. A week after their first league title in three years and their first win over FSHA in 25  years, the Cubs hosted Heritage High School last night in the gym in the first round of the CIF playoffs. As she has done all year, our Athlete of the Week, Annelise Rising ’23, led the team to victory. The Cubs came away with a dominant 25-15, 25-20, 25-15 win over the Patriots—Mayfield's first volleyball playoff win since 2015! The Cubs will play tomorrow on the road in Fontana at Summit High School in a 1:00 p.m. second-round match. A win tomorrow will put the Cubs in the CIF Quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Our golf team completed their season on Tuesday with our two seniors, Amy Baum ’22 and Kate Thompson ’22, representing Mayfield one last time in the Prep League finals at the Almansor Golf Course. Both of our "Cubs with Clubs" were terrific in their final match ever for Mayfield. The competition in the Prep League this year was the best it has ever been in golf, but Amy and Kate made Mayfield proud with their wonderful efforts.

Today our cross country team will compete in the largest cross country invitational in the country, the Mt. SAC Invitational. The JV team will run at 1:12 p.m. and the Varsity team will run at 2:04 p.m. This is the same course that the CIF Finals will be held at in a few weeks, so this will give our girls invaluable experience. The Cubs are also now only eight days away from the Prep League Finals next Saturday at Pierce College. Mayfield will serve as the host of the meet and will still have a few ways the Mayfield community can help our team be gracious hosts. Please see our SignUp Genius page and donate some items if you can—all items should be turned in on Friday, Oct. 29. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

Lastly, the holidays are coming soon and with that, there is the largest fundraiser the Booster Club has each year—our annual Booster Club Christmas Tree Sale! The Cubs Christmas Store is now open and you can purchase your trees, wreaths, and garland for pickup or delivery on Saturday, Dec. 4. But don't wait—you must place your order by Friday, Nov. 12, only three weeks from today! This is a wonderful way to get ready for the holidays and support our student-athletes as they compete for Mayfield.

As always, thank you for your support and GO CUBS!
