Cubs to compete in modified two-season CIF schedule for 2020-21

Dear Mayfield Community,

As you may have heard, the CIF State and Southern Section offices announced an adjusted athletics calendar for the 2020-21 school year yesterday. The calendar has shifted from the traditional three-season model to a modified two-season schedule and all sports have been postponed until the end of 2020. There will be no scheduled competitions until late December or early January 2021.
  • The "Fall" season will consist of cross country, volleyball and water polo.Competition will begin no earlier than Dec. 19, 2020 and end-of-season CIF Finals are planned for mid-March 2021.
  • The "Spring" season will consist of eight sports: badminton, basketball, golf, soccer, softball, swim and dive, tennis and track and field. Competitions will start between Feb. 22, 2021 (tennis) and March 20, 2021 (golf and track and field).
  • The CIF State office also announced a suspension of bylaws 600-605, which usually prohibit student-athletes from participating on a team outside of school. In a one-year exception for the 2020-2021 school year, students will be permitted to participate on an outside team at the same time they participate on their high school team.
All of this is contingent on our students being back on campus by the end of the calendar year. Obviously this is going to have a major effect on our student-athletes, particularly in the "Spring" season, when there will be eight sports offered by Mayfield.

The Prep League Athletic Directors met yesterday and discussed the new calendar. We will publish our game schedules in the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience as this is uncharted territory for all of us.

Please look over the CIF State Release for more information. The CIF Southern Section Release includes specific dates for competitions, sit-out periods and playoff dates for each sport.

Finally, as we begin to work on facility reservation and game schedules, the entire Prep League is reaching out to their students to gauge interest in what sport(s) you might be interested in participating in, particularly in the Spring season.

Students, please click here to indicate which sport(s) you might participate in during 2020-21 by this Sunday, July 26. This form is not a firm commitment, rather, it just shows us where student interest is at this time.

I am sure that many of you have questions and I will be happy to answer anything I am able to.  There are many more questions than answers at this point, but it is very exciting to have a schedule to build. We are continuing to pray for the safety of everyone in the Mayfield community. Please take care of yourself and your families, and I look forward to seeing you all in the coming year!

Sincerely,

Athletic Director
