Water polo back in Prep League race and Cubs up 4-2 in FSHA Rivalry Series
Some weeks are quieter than others—but this was definitely not one of those weeks. One of our teams ended a long losing streak with a win in the Rivalry Series with FSHA and another team pulled off an upset against the #1-ranked team in CIF!
The highlight of the week came on Wednesday as the Cubs water polo team (unranked in Division 6) traveled to take on La Salle (#1 in Division 7) in a rescheduled game. La Salle won the first match with the Cubs last month, but it was clear from the outset that this game would have a different outcome. Behind some early stellar work from goaltender Audrey Bland ’20, the Cubs led 4-3 after the first quarter and eventually cruised to a 16-11 victory over the Lancers. Kate Thompson ’22 led a balanced Cubs attack with nine goals in the game! The win puts the Cubs squarely back in the Prep League playoff race with another big match today against Chadwick, the #2-ranked team in Division 6.
Not to be outdone, the basketball teams hosted Flintridge Sacred Heart in the latest installment of the Rivalry Series. After six of the 10 athletic competitions this school year, Mayfield has a 4-2 edge over FSHA, having already won the cross country, golf, tennis, and water polo games. The Tologs jumped out to an early lead before the Cubs rebounded in the second quarter, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game—until the final minute. FSHA hit a three-point basket with less than 10 seconds remaining, tying the game at 39 and sending it into overtime. In the overtime period, the Cubs defense took over and limited the Tologs to just two points, while the offense did just enough to earn a 43-41 win and secure the Cubs’ fifth win in this year’s Rivalry Series. With three sports still to come in the spring, Mayfield needs just one win to clinch our first Series victory. The JV basketball team also won a thriller, beating FSHA by two points.
Soccer has had the week off in preparation for one of its biggest games of the season. The Cubs will host Flintridge Prep, the #1-ranked team in Division 3, this afternoon. Prep shut out the Cubs in their first matchup, but the Cubs will be looking to pull the upset for a playoff berth.
With our spring sports on the horizon, it is crunch time for our winter sports and based on the results of this week, it is going to be a very exciting few weeks. We hope to see you at a game—our Senior Night games are on the calendar and the girls love the support.
