Cubs tennis team serves up a strong season opener as golf and volleyball get set for league play
It’s been a busy week for the Cubs, with two more teams kicking off their fall seasons and the start of a new school year. The "student" part of student-athlete is the most important element, and it has been great to see everyone back on campus getting into the swing of their hectic schedules.
This week’s highlight was a thrilling win in our Rivalry Series with FSHA on the golf course. Varsity golf teed off their season yesterday at Brookside against our rivals from the hill and came away with a thrilling two-shot victory. The Cubs won 188-190 over the Tologs to win our first game of the year with FSHA. The Mayfield team was led by Megan Moffat '20 and Amy Baum '22, who had the lowest scores of the 14 golfers who competed.
Tennis also served up their season opener yesterday with Varsity traveling to take on Immaculate Heart and JV hosting the Pandas at our home courts at the Arroyo Racquet Center. Varsity won 16-2 with Sofie Mireles '20 and Samantha Frick '23 going 3-0 in their singles matches and Sami Kennedy '20 winning 2-0. On the doubles side, Alexia Saigh '20 paired with Rebecca Leiva '22, and Elise Kingston '21 with Sheryl Cheng '23, to both go 3-0 in doubles play. The JV team fell in their home opener, but a number of girls got great experience in their first-ever high school matches, and Grace Nguyen '23 won an electrifying match in a 7-5 tiebreak.

The volleyball teams finished up the non-league portion of their early season schedules. The Frosh/Soph team went 2-0 this week with wins over San Marino and Viewpoint. JV split the week with a win over Viewpoint last night, and Varsity is still looking to get in the win column after tough four-set losses to the Titans and the Patriots. All three teams open league play this afternoon with games at Westridge.
Cross Country doesn't open their season until next Saturday, but continues to train hard in the hot afternoon temperatures to prepare for what we believe will be a very successful season. The recently released CIF preseason rankings rated the Cubs at #7 in our division.
Next week will be a fun week as volleyball continues play in the Prep League, tennis plays former league foe Webb, golf opens league against Westridge, and cross country will compete in the Rosemead Invitational. Don't forget to be an athletic booster by joining the Booster Club and get out to a game, our girls love it when the stands are full!
