All spring sports teams win playoff spots; Softball Cubs cruise to 1st round victory

Championship season is upon us! After months of pre-season conditioning and challenging workouts, the payoff is finally here. This week all four spring sports teams already have or will compete for league and CIF titles.
On Monday CIF released the softball playoff brackets and the Cubs were rewarded with No. 3 seed in the Division 7 competition. The Cubs were given the opportunity to open the playoffs yesterday at home against Cal Lutheran. They wasted no time in showing why they will be a force in this year's playoffs. Bolstered by Jaylin Domingo's '19 shutout, the Cubs scored five runs in the first and nine more in the second, cruising to a 14-0 victory. Now the Cubs will travel to take on the Beverly Hills Normans on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Swimming & Diving completed their season with the Division 3 Championships out in Riverside. On Monday, Julia Kasputis '19 represented the Cubs for the last time time in her stellar career. Julia has qualified for the CIF Finals each of her four years as a Cub. After consecutive ninth place finishes as a freshman and sophomore, Julia broke through with a seventh-place finish last year and looked for even more this year. After three solid dives to start her round, she strained her meniscus badly on her fourth dive. She gave it a go with one final dive in the fifth round, but had to retire from the injury. It was a bittersweet ending for Julia, but she graduates as a four-time CIF qualifier, three-time CIF finalist, and with the second-highest dive score in school history. Yesterday Sami Pratt '21 finished her sophomore campaign as the lone qualifier for the Cubs at the CIF swim meet. Sami finished just outside the scorers in the 100 butterfly, but in her specialty, the 100 breaststroke, she placed 14th overall. Her time this year is the third best in Mayfield school history and was less than a second off All-American consideration.

Badminton played in the Almonte League Finals on Tuesday at the San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club and, with their performance this year, the Cubs have qualified for the CIF playoffs for the second year in a row. The Cubs will play this Monday at Baldwin Park in a first round CIF match.

Finally, our Prep League Champion Track & Field team has had eight days to rest and get ready for the CIF Division 4 Prelims tomorrow at Carpinteria High School. The field events begin at 11:00 a.m. and the track events begin at noon. The Cubs look to qualify many of our stars for next week's CIF Finals, including top seed Audrey Suarez '21, and our Athlete of the Week from last week, Jolie Beegle '21.

With all our teams so busy, just a reminder that we will honor student-athletes at our Spring Sports Banquet on Wednesday, May 15. We we ask all guests to please RSVP by next Friday, May 10.

It should be a very exciting last few weeks of the season, we hope to see you at a badminton match, softball game, or a track & field meet. Our girls love to have your support.

Go Cubs!
