Cub Athletics: Strong, competitive and distinguished by some glorious wins!
What a year it has been for our sports teams at Mayfield! We have more students participating on athletic teams than ever before, a reflection of how Mayfield encourages and welcomes our students on their high school journey of discovery. Soccer, Swim/Dive, and Volleyball took in 50-plus athletes and we actually had to add a second JV team to our soccer program. What continues to distinguish Mayfield Athletics is not only our glorious wins but our growing competitiveness, incredible “sportswomanship” across all teams and the sheer grit and spirit among our student-athletes.
Our winter season ended bittersweet for each of our three teams. Basketball and soccer just missed out on the playoffs after battling for berths down to the last week. The most thrilling result came from our water polo team, which won a mini-league tournament over La Salle and Westridge to advance to the playoffs. The Cubs ran into a buzz saw in the first round of the playoffs in the form of the Arcadia Apaches, who eliminated the Cubs early on.
Our spring sports are all peaking at the right time. Track & Field is well on its way to continuing dominance with its fifth consecutive Prep League championship at hand. The Cubs have won all four league cluster meets this season and looked very impressive in the league prelims last Tuesday. CIF League Finals next week should be a lot of fun and the Cubs look like they will be competing for many more weeks in the Masters and State meets in May. And with only two seniors graduating from the team, it doesn't look like their reign will be ending anytime soon.
Our Softball team had a slow start to the season with many of the girls coming off winter sports. At the midpoint of the league season the Cubs stood tied for fourth. But the team has reeled off five wins in a row, including this week's 9-3 takedown of first place, and formerly undefeated, Poly. With only one regular season game left today, the Cubs have wrapped up a second place league finish and are ranked #4 in CIF. It also looks like the softball team will be playing deep into May as they compete for the school's first-ever CIF softball championship.
Swim/Dive finished their regular season this week. The Varsity team had their best finish in years, placing second in league with a 5-1 record, including their first win over a dominant Poly team since 2013. Next week the Cubs compete in the League Championship meet with hopes of winning their first league title in six years and sending multiple athletes on to the CIF Championships in May. The JV team also has had a memorable season, finishing 9-1 overall, 6-0 in league, and next week at the league finals, the Cubs will very likely win their 15th consecutive Prep League title, going back to 2005!
Badminton continues to be one of the more popular sports on campus with more than 30 girls on the team—most of them are freshmen who had never played the sport before! Experience has been the biggest obstacle for the Cubs and we have time on our side with so many freshmen. In addition, the Cubs have a former CIF championship coach now running the program and the future, with these talented young athletes and a gifted coach, is very bright.
As our sports year comes to an end in the coming weeks, we hope to see many of you cheering on the Softball, Swim/Dive, and Track & Field teams. Each team could have memorable finishes and it’s always great to have Cub fans in the stands! Also, our 13th Annual Dad's Poker Night is one week from today, on Thursday, April 25, right across the street from school at the home of Booster members, the Pipperts. All Mayfield dads are—past and present!—are welcome.
I would like to sincerely thank all of you who have supported the Cubs this year. The future of our athletic program is very strong and I am thrilled to be a part of it. See you at the field and in the stands.
