Vaccinations are up, cases are down and we're looking ahead to brighter days

The case rate remains low and stable and L.A. County officially entered the yellow tier this week. This is a happy milestone for us all! As more sectors reopen, there will be more opportunities to participate in more activities. The safest way to do so is to be vaccinated, and to continue wearing a face mask covering your nose and mouth and maintaining social distancing. These simple steps will make enjoying graduations, celebrations and gathering with family and friends safer for everyone.

Along with health officials, we continue to encourage eligible students to be vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccinations are available at County-run sites and many community sites without an appointment via www.VaccinateLACounty.com. Please send me a copy of your daughter’s vaccine card, even with just one dose, so we can verify how well protected our students are.

The FDA could authorize the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine for ages 12 and older as soon as next week. This would come at a very good time as teens resume summer activities and plan for school next year. It will also help prevent more variants from arising as more infections make more mutations possible—mutations that could make the virus more transmissible or capable of causing more severe illness. We do not want another surge like the ones happening in other states and other countries.

Just a reminder that we’re keeping windows and doors open in all indoor spaces to promote increased ventilation. With our “Gray May” mornings, this can make some classrooms cold in the mornings. And with our warming temperatures, some classrooms can become warm in the afternoon. We advise students to dress in layers to accommodate the changing temperatures.

Stay healthy!
