New LACDPH health order issued May 13 reminds us that COVID-19 is still "easily transmitted among people”

A new health order was issued this week by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health that allows retailers and manufacturers, select recreational facilities and beaches to reopen with specific guidelines. Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of the LACDPH, reminded us “the virus has not changed and is still easily transmitted among people.”

It remains important for us to continue practicing physical distancing of at least six feet and wearing cloth face coverings that securely cover both our nose and mouth whenever we go out and are near others that are not in our household. The order prohibits public and private gatherings, and gatherings of people who do not live in the same household. Read the complete health order issued on May 13.

Los Angeles County continues to experience an average of 50 deaths per day from COVID-19 and it has remained the leading cause of death in the county for several weeks. In less than a month, there have been over 1,300 COVID-related deaths in the county. The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when in contact with others from outside your household.

In the last week, more than 300 additional cases were confirmed in the 0-17 age group in Los Angeles County alone. We must continue to protect everyone. The elderly and anyone with underlying health conditions are the most vulnerable, but all age groups and people of all health status are affected.

We’re all in this together, and we’re all still Safer at Home.
