The latest COVID-19 news and recommendations

I am so thankful that our Mayfield community is staying healthy. It seems much longer than three weeks since we’ve seen each other.

Yesterday, Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer reminded everyone to take care of their emotional health and to check in frequently with those in our extended communities. “This will be a long haul, and we have many weeks of work ahead before we begin to see the benefits of our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19,” said Dr. Ferrer. “But if we act as one community against this virus, by staying home as much as possible, self-isolating when we are sick and self-quarantining if we’ve been exposed, we will get through this, together.”

Dr. Ferrer emphasized that social distancing remains our number one tool and must be continued for us to besuccessful in flattening the curve. The other guidelines that are important to follow are: staying home, hand washing, not touching your face, and following the self-isolation and self-quarantine guidelines.

This virus does not know age, race or sex; it can and is infecting all members of our local community. Here are some of the most recent updates on COVID-19:

  • The CDC has determined that COVID-19 can be transmitted up to 48 hours before a person develops symptoms. This makes “Safer at Home” that much more important.
  • Both the CDC and NIH state “it may be beneficial to wear a facemask” when you go out, but this should not replace social distancing. The six-foot barrier is essential to maintain, even while wearing a facemask. Facemasks aren’t so much to protect you from the virus, it’s to protect other people from your respiratory droplets that can carry the virus.
  • At this time, COVID-19 testing in Los Angeles County is prioritized for those with symptoms who are 65 and older, those with symptoms who have underlying chronic health conditions, those who are subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine period due to a confirmed COVID-19 exposure (with more than seven days of quarantine remaining.)
  • If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever and symptom free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen, you have underlying health conditions or are pregnant.
As it is important to stay informed of the situation, I suggest you get your information from trusted sources, such as:
Thank you for all the sacrifices you’re making. We’re doing this for each other; there’s no greater gift of love than that.
