How to tell the difference between allergies, the flu, and COVID-19

Hello Mayfield Community,

Is it COVID-19? Is it allergies? Is it a cold? Is it the flu? With pollen and seasonal allergy symptoms on the rise right now, many people are asking these questions. This chart from the Allergy and Asthma Network may help you to tell the difference.

Here are some basic tips:

Allergy symptoms are “itchy” symptoms: itchy eyes, itchy nose, itchy throat and maybe even itchy skin. It’s important to avoid your allergy triggers and start taking your allergy medication early and regularly.

The major difference between flu and COVID-19 is that the flu symptoms include body and muscle aches and headaches. If you suspect you or a family member has the flu, call your healthcare provider.

COVID-19 symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath.

When should you call your healthcare provider:
  • If you develop a fever of 100 or above that lasts for over 24 hours, especially if you’d had a known exposure to anyone with the flu or COVID-19.
  • If you develop respiratory symptoms, cough or shortness of breath.
  • Before going to the doctor’s office, urgent care or emergency room to help determine the best place for you to go.

Be blessed,
