Head of School's Welcome

Head's Weekly Message — Dec. 14, 2018

Dear Mayfield Senior School Parents,

It is times like these that I especially cherish our Mayfield Senior School community. On Tuesday, as we gathered together to pray for our beloved classmate and her family, we also comforted each other, reminding ourselves that we are never alone. Our God is always with us. I think we felt that Divine Presence on Tuesday in a most powerful way.

I felt the Divine Presence also during yesterday’s assembly as a group of our wise and courageous students helped us all understand more deeply issues around body image. This is a pressing concern, particularly for teenage girls, and I am so grateful that our students were able to share important information including resources that are available. Thanks go especially to Cristina Perez and Sarah Briuer Boland for supporting our students in this effort of love.

I think our founder, Cornelia Connelly, has also been with us during this Advent season, especially through the arts. The dance performances last weekend were truly exquisite. I was so fortunate to be able to bring my almost 90-year-old mother to the Saturday matinee. She was a serious dancer herself—even through college, and seeing our wonderful students performed brought tears to her eyes. I want to thank Denise Leitner and her incredible dancers as well as Phil Velasco and the technical theatre crew for giving us such a memorable and moving gift.

Carol Night last evening was another lovely gift to our community. I was so proud of our musicians—they played with sensitivity and confidence, filling Pike Auditorium with the sounds of the season. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to join in. For me, playing music with others is really a spiritual experience—especially meaningful when I am able to share it with our students. With deep gratitude I thank Christin Hablewitz for her beautiful leadership.

We had a little taste of our incredible vocal ensemble last night as well. Please join me on Sunday afternoon for the full concert at the
San Marino Community Church, when I promise your souls will be inspired and your hearts will overflow with the holy spirit of Christmas.

With Love and Gratitude,

Kate Morin
