Family and friends gather for the graduation of the Class of 2022
The graduation of the Class of 2022 on the Mayfield Senior School campus felt historic for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the largest construction project ever embarked on by the school was completed only a few weeks earlier, and people were able to see the restored Strub Hall without its scaffolding, showing off its timeless elegance once again. Secondly, there was a rare sense of excitement of having all family and friends welcomed back to campus, in the absence of restrictive COVID-19 prohibitions. And finally, the celebrations were centered on the resilient, creative and generous Class of 2022 themselves.
Senior Class President, Avalon Dela Rosa ‘22 kicked off the event with a heartfelt speech.
She reflected that in the four short years, this class witnessed the rise of a global pandemic, the growth of the MeToo movement, and a highly significant 2020 presidential election. She reflected on the time these students spent off campus in remote learning, which forced much more self-examination and understanding “the importance of sacrifice.” Avalon quoted the words of the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ), Cornelia Connelly, who asked, “There is no love without sacrifice, is there?” Avalon also talked about how she and her classmates experienced moments of “drastic and sudden change,” things that turned out to be “transformational” and where they learned “a valuable lesson.” She referred to these moments as "God-winks."
Head of School Kate Morin spoke lovingly of this class—emphasizing their strength and their kindness. She pointed out their courage and their willingness to embrace a “growth mindset” that allowed them unique flexibility in the face of obstacles. She advised them, “to take risks, even if it means making mistakes.” And Commencement Speaker, Sister Sheila McNiff SHCJ, a Mayfield alum from the Class of 1956, reminded the Class of 2022 of the long legacy of Holy Child schools, nationally and internationally. Graduating from Mayfield didn’t mean they weren’t still connected. There were members of the Holy Child family—a family 175 years in the making—and still growing!
The school was honored to have Fr. Marcos Gonzalez--the representative of the Most Reverend Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez--to give the final blessing. Mayfield Senior School is incredibly proud of the Class of 2022. Now it is time for the graduates to go into the world, and forge their own paths, or as Ms. Morin told them: "Go make a ruckus!"
