Our Cubs are back in action, and we're gearing up for our biggest-ever spring sports season

When I walked off the pool deck at Buckley High School on March 11, 2020, all I was thinking was that it was nice to get our first league win of the swim season, and how the next few weeks were going to get much busier with badminton matches, softball games, and track & field meets crammed together before we went to Spring Break. Two days later the world changed for all of us, and that turned out to be the last Mayfield athletic competition to be held... until this week!
Mother Nature had some say in postponing Wednesday's volleyball matches, but yesterday—358 days after that fateful swim meet—we had our first Mayfield competitions! It took a lot of work from a lot of people (thank you so much to our amazing Facilities team, wonderful coaches and the best athletic trainers in the business), and yesterday afternoon, we were able to host FSHA and San Marino in three volleyball matches. And the best part of it all, the chance to honor four members of the Class of 2021, who played in their final home games of their high school careers yesterday: Laura Kate Byers, Danay Dunn, Sally Pontrelli and Mariana Trujillo. The Cubs won some sets and lost some sets, but the results were inconsequential really. To see the girls on our Bellefontaine campus, with athletes from all three schools competing, laughing and being kids again was worth the wait.

Tomorrow we will honor six members of the Cross Country team with an intrasquad race in the Arroyo at 10:00 a.m. Seniors Gillian Gorocica, Katie Limongelli, Sami Pratt, Stephanie Rodriguez, Olivia Sclafani and Audrey Suarez will all be honored. And then on Monday, our spring sports will begin the busiest athletic season in Mayfield history—badminton, basketball, equestrian, golf, soccer, softball, swim & dive, tennis, and track & field are all slated to have their seasons in April and May! Continue to pray for our girls and our school community because it is working and we are finally off to a great start this year.

Go Cubs!
