CIF-SS is taking notice as Fall athletes find their feet

Last year’s Fall sports teams had a lot of early season success. A number of factors contributedcertainly talent, hard work and dedication—but one of the most important elements was experience. Each team had seniors who had been in the program for years, so when the games, matches, and meets started, the Cubs won early and often!

Fast forward to Fall of 2019, and there has been a bit of a youth movement in Cubs athletics. The cross country, golf, tennis, and volleyball teams have had some growing pains early in the season’s non-league competition. But as we begin the Prep League, the Cubs are starting to thrive! That same skill and commitment to hard work is definitely there, and the results are starting to show as our young athletes gain experience.

The CIF Southern Section’s most recent Top 10 rankings show the Cubs are gaining respect. Cross Country, led by defending Division 4 State Champion Audrey Suarez ’21, has moved up to #5 in the latest rankings. The Cubs ran in the Prep League cluster meet this week and dominated the competition. Varsity won the meet by placing 1, 2, and 3, with five runners in the top 11. JV also came up with a huge victory, with their top runners placing 2, 3, and 4. The team has only raced twice this year, but they’ve already shown they will once again be a force in our league, our section, and at state in November.

Tennis has had a resurgence in 2019, with an influx of young talent. The Cubs lost one of the San Gabriel Valley’s best players when Lauren Panajotovic ’19 graduated, but with freshman Samantha Frick ’23 leading the singles teams, and Sheryl Cheng ’23 leading the doubles, the Cubs are off to a great start. They moved into the latest CIF rankings at #5, after not being ranked at all in previous polls. The team has one of its biggest matches of the year today against on Flintridge Sacred Heart, before getting back to league play and shooting for Prep League honors.

Almost 60 girls tried out for volleyball this year—almost 20% of the student body! With so much talent it’s not a surprise that both the JV & Frosh-Soph teams are undefeated in Prep League play so far. The JV team is 6-0, after going undefeated in 2018 as well, and the Frosh-Soph team is 5-0, after a third-place finish in 2018. Not to be outdone, Varsity is shaping up well. The Cubs struggled early in the season after eight key members from the 2018 league championship team graduated, but the Cubs have won three of their last four league matches and look to be a force in Division 4 once again. Look for the team to compete well in next month’s Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix on Oct. 4-5.

Under second-year coach Kathie Diehl, the golf team is also swinging it well! The Cubs began the season with a thrilling two-shot victory over FSHA down at Brookside golf course. The highlight of the season, though, was this week’s terrific win over league favorite Poly. With the Cubs and the Panthers tied 244-244, Daniela Bachman ’20 won a tiebreaker shot to secure the win! The Cubs are five-time defending league champions and are fighting hard to win a sixth straight title.

The highlight of our Fall sports season is our new “Actions Not Words” tradition—the Dig Pink volleyball match with FSHA, benefiting the Cancer Support Community Pasadena. This year we’re hosting the Tologs on Monday, Oct. 7 in the Cubs Cave. The Boosters will host their annual Booster BBQ in the Senior Lot, with free food for all! Game tickets cost $5, with 100% of the proceeds going to the CSC Pasadena. We hope to see all of you there...it will certainly be a loud and boisterous gym that day!

Many Cub supporters have already joined our Booster Club and I encourage you all to continue to support our students. We truly appreciate all you do for our athletes!

And don’t forget to follow us on Twitter—we are live tweeting our games, so you can get up-to-the-minute scores and results!

Look forward to seeing you out there.

Go Cubs!
