Mayfield offers a well-rounded and successful high school athletic program in 11 different sports over three seasons. Our goal is to give each student the opportunity to experience athletics in a positive, fun-filled environment. We believe that the playing fields are an extension of the classroom, teaching the values and principles of Education-Based Athletics.
Fall Athletics Tryouts
Cross Country, Golf, Tennis and Volleyball are the four fall sports offered at Mayfield Senior School. Volleyball tryouts will be held the week of Aug. 9-13 and cross country, golf and tennis tryouts will be held Aug. 16-20. Our first matches/games of the season typically start in late August. Tryouts are mandatory for all athletes wishing to be on a team and regular practice continues immediately after the tryout period on a daily basis. Completing all the requirements on Magnus Health (including a current physical) is a pre-requisite for all sports.
Please note:
The tryout period is very important for the coaches to properly determine each student's spot on a team. If you have to miss any of the required dates, you must inform the coach before tryouts begin. Failure to do so could affect your spot on a team.
For most of our teams we do not make cuts and all those who try out will make the team. However, on our Tennis and Volleyball teams, we MAY have to make cuts depending on the number of students who try out for the team, so no one is guaranteed a spot on these teams.
Sports practice begins the day after tryouts. Practice takes place every afternoon and some Saturdays. Practice times and locations vary depending on the sport and level of play. Attendance at all practices is mandatory. Missing 20% or more will result in no credit for that season. The commitment is for the full season, including play-offs. Quitting a team midway through the season will compromise the athlete’s standing in the future.
Competition
Mayfield offers competition on two levels (JV and Varsity) for most sports. Volleyball has three levels — Frosh, JV & Varsity. A freshman may be selected for a varsity team! Post-season CIF play may impact school holidays and weekends so please check the school athletic calendar when planning vacations. Most tournaments occur over weekends and during school vacations. Please be aware of this when arranging vacation time.
Basketball and Badminton practices are on campus in the gym. Summer basketball is highly recommended for all potential players. Both F/S and Varsity play in a summer Tournament and league for basketball.
Cross Country is a fall sport, and our runners start practicing in the summer. The top 12-16 Athletes may attend a week-long camp in Big Bear the second week in August. All runners will continue practice the following week. The teams usually attend one or two overnight trips during the season, competing in San Francisco and Clovis. Extra fees apply to these trips. This highly successful team usually competes in the CIF State meet in Fresno over Thanksgiving weekend.
Pre-Season Strength & Conditioning takes place on campus in three six-week periods. This is typically held three days a week for one hour after school.
Swim occurs off campus at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada. (Subject to change) Practice times vary depending on the facility. There are morning practices three times a week as well as afternoons. Coaches will drive the athletes to training in the school vans from Mayfield Senior School. Swimmers attend Tournaments/Invitationals on Saturdays and selected swimmers may attend an overnight trip for a meet. Extra fees apply.
Tennis practices occur off campus for varsity and on campus for JV. All JV and varsity matches are played at the Arroyo Racquet Center, our home base. Athletes are expected to practice over the summer.
Track and Field practice is on campus and at South Pasadena High School, as well as surrounding areas for long runs. Some Invitational Meets are held over Spring break and all are on Saturdays.
Water Polo occurs off campus at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada. These practices are from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. Coaches will drive the athletes to Prep in the school vans from Mayfield Senior School. Water Polo athletes attend tournaments/invitationals on Saturdays.
Summer Volleyball practice is highly recommended and essential for potential varsity players. Varsity will attend an overnight tournament during the season. CIF playoffs can carry over to the Thanksgiving weekend. All three teams play in an all-day tournament during the regular season.

The 2022-2023 school year saw another athletic calendar filled with thrilling victories for the Cubs! Mayfield once again led the Prep League in Varsity league titles as Track & Field won their unprecedented 8th consecutive title, Swimming & Diving won their 3rd straight title and Tennis & Volleyball each won their 2nd consecutive championship. The Cubs also placed three girls on the All CIF 1st team as Katie Gomez ’23 in Soccer, Annelise Rising ’23 in Volleyball, and Kennedy Taylor ’25 in Softball, all were given the highly prestigious honor. For their stellar efforts, Gomez and Rising were also selected as the Prep League MVPs in their sports. Samantha Frick ’23 won her 3rd consecutive Prep League singles championship in tennis and led the team to an appearance in the 2nd round of the CIF playoffs. Sissy Page ’25 (High Jump) and Morgan Burns ‘25 (Diving) also broke 17-year-old school records in their events.
We had the opportunity to honor our Spring athletes and give out our year-end awards at the Spring Sports Banquet on Wednesday night. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate a terrific year of achievements for Cubs athletics! Read more about our award winners. Go Cubs!
The 2022-2023 Athletics Calendar came to an end this week with four Cubs competing at the CIF Track Finals last weekend at Moorpark High School. Sade Falese '23, Liz Goethals '23, Sissy Page '25 and Leah Whitfield '26 all finished in the top-9 of their events and helped the Cubs finish 16th at the meet. The final athletic event of the year was this week's CIF Badminton Individual Championships at Arcadia High School. For the 1st time in school history, Mayfield sent four girls to compete in the event. Ella Bennett '25, Neci Dunn '25, Tracy Jiang '25 and Sadee Villalobos '25 competed with five boys from Loyola in the competition, performing very well overall.
After the end of a memorable softball run through the CIF playoffs yesterday, we have only one sport remaining this school year. With a 4th place finish in the competitive Prep League, the softball team knew it had clinched a playoff spot, but figured the path in the playoffs would be a difficult one. They were forced to play a wildcard game out in Oro Grande, just to get to the 1st round of the playoffs. After winning that game, the team returned to Riverside two days later for a 1st round game with Notre Dame, which the team won handily. Things got much more serious in the 2nd round when the team traveled to Cerritos to take on #4 ranked Valley Christian. In the “game of the year” for the Cubs, Mayfield made up an early 2-0 deficit with five runs in the fifth inning and held on for a thrilling 6-4 upset victory over the Defenders! Our road warriors finally earned a home game for yesterday's CIF Quarterfinal game, of course, it was against highly ranked #5 Artesia. After the Cubs led 2-1 going into the fifth inning, the visiting Pioneers scraped together six runs over the next two innings and finally defeated Mayfield, 7-3, ending the Cubs season. After logging hundreds of miles and three great wins, the Cubs playoff run ended, but it was a thrilling two-week ride for the team and their fans.
The spring playoff season is in full swing this week as Softball, Swim, and Track & Field are all competing in the CIF postseason. The Softball team won their wildcard game in Oro Grande, 13-5, over Riverside Prep on Tuesday. The Cubs actually trailed the Silver Knights 4-3 in the 6th inning before Mayfield's offense exploded for 10 runs in the 6th inning and the Cubs cruised to an easy victory in the end. After being rained out yesterday, Mayfield will finally play their 1st round game this afternoon against Notre Dame/Riverside at Shamel Park with a first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
The final week of the regular season was a thrilling one. In addition to honoring the members of the Class of 2023 at our Senior Nights for Softball, Swim & Dive, and Track & Field—the Cubs won two Prep League titles! Track & Field won their 8th consecutive championship in a tight meet on Tuesday night in Burbank. The Cubs bookended the meet by winning both the 4 X 100 Relay (Alyssa Gallardo '23, Sade Falese '23, Liz Goethals '23 and Monika Vargas '25) and the 4 X 400 Relay (Liz Goethals, Leah Whitfield '26, Natalie Miera '23 and Cecilia Kvochak '23). In between the two relay wins, the Cubs won six individual events, led by Vargas' two victories in the 100 & 300 hurdles, Falese in the long jump, Goethals in the discus, Sissy Page '25 in the high jump, and Whitfield in the triple jump. The meet was the closest Finals in years, but the Cubs continued their historic run of titles by scoring 136 points, ahead of 2nd place Westridge's 106 points. All of the event winners will have the opportunity to compete in next week's CIF Division 4 Prelims.
The spring season is coming to an end as each of the five spring sports completes their season. Badminton's regular season came to an end last night with a thrilling evening in the gym. The Cubs honored two Mayfield Cubs and four Loyola Cubs who played their final matches for the team. Not only was it a great night to honor Jenna Kim '23 and Lindsay Snyder '23, but the team delivered a thrilling victory over cross-town rival Pasadena Poly, 11-10. It was the Cubs second victory of the season—matching the most wins in school history! The Cubs will now await to see if the team or any of their individuals will be chosen for the CIF playoffs in May. It was a wonderful way to end the season and send off the seniors victoriously
The Mayfield Track & Field team has been the dominant team in the Prep League for nearly a decade, having won every league title since 2015. In the first two league cluster meets, the Cubs fell behind early and could not recover to make up the deficit. However, in the final tuneup before next week's Prep League Prelims, Mayfield asserted itself as the team to beat once again, with a solid team victory with 88.5 points. Westridge appears to be the biggest threat to the Cubs reign, as the Tigers placed second with 77 points. Mayfield had a number of great performances on the day, but were led by 1st place finishers Leah Whitfield ’26 (800m), Nikki Hensley ’24 (100m & 300m hurdles), Sissy Page ’25 (high jump) and Liz Goethals ’23 (discus). With just a few days remaining before the Prelims, the Cubs appear to be peaking at the right time.
The Cubs' week has been up and down. Tuesday was one of the best days of the year, with Softball coming from behind in the final inning to defeat Pasadena Poly, 6-5, in a thrilling victory. The Cubs trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the 7th before scoring four runs to pull out a come- from-behind victory. On the same day, the Swim & Dive teams traveled to Pasadena Poly and came away with huge victories: Varsity won 123-56 and the JV team won 123-17. The highlight of the day, however, was the badminton teams' lopsided win over Fairmont Prep: 18-3! This was the first win for the Cubs (Mayfield and Loyola) in Badminton since the 2017 season. It was a great performance from the young team and an exciting win for everyone!
The winter weather has wreaked havoc on our spring sports schedules, but the rain has not slowed our Cubs spirits or their successes! All four spring sports are having memorable seasons so far. Perhaps the highlight of the season came just yesterday in the gym as our co-ed Badminton team (combined with the Cubs of Loyola) hosted Fairmont Prep in the Cubs Cave. The Mayfield/Loyola badminton team is made up of mostly novices new to the sport who often play some of the most talented high school players in the state. As a result, the Cubs had not won a match since the 2017 season. There have been numerous near misses, but the team could not get over the hump, until last night. The Cubs defeated Fairmont Prep of Anaheim, 18-3, to improve their record this season to 1-4! With two more matches remaining, the future of Cubs Badminton looks bright!
Our more traditional teams of Softball, Swim & Dive and Track & Field have continued their trend of recent successes. Softball stands at 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the Prep League, currently in 2nd place, still with a chance to win their first league title since 2018. The Cubs went 2-2 at the prestigious Torrey Invitational in La Jolla, and with a team of 23, 20 of whom are freshmen and sophomores, the Cubs appear to be on the rise!
With Spring Break beginning today, the spring sports have just over a month left in their regular season. As league action heats up, the Cubs have also been well traveled. The Softball team is down in La Jolla competing in this weekend's 16th Annual Torrey Invitational, hosted by La Jolla Country Day. Yesterday they opened play in the tournament with a 5-4 loss to San Diego HS. The Cubs have another game this afternoon before finishing play with a doubleheader tomorrow. Mayfield currently sits in 2nd place in the Prep League, one game behind Providence.
Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! I am writing from Concord, CA, as our Varsity swim team is taking part in the 33rd annual De La Salle Invitational this weekend. The Cubs will take on the best teams in northern California in a great tuneup for the most important meets of the year in the coming weeks.
The weather has continued to wreak havoc on the Cubs calendar. Our Prep League cluster meet for the Track & Field team was cancelled on Tuesday. A select group of runners have qualified for this weekend's Arcadia Distance Challenge and will run on the famous Arcadia High School track tomorrow. The Cubs continue to have some of the best marks in the area and all of CIF. Tomorrow should be a great test against some elite competition.
The season is well underway and as expected, our spring sports are off to strong starts. The largest Softball team in years also happens to be one of the youngest: 3 Juniors and Seniors out of the 22 Cubs on the team. Despite the inexperience, the Cubs are off to a great start with two nice non-league wins this week over San Marino (12-9) on Wednesday and Alhambra (8-7) yesterday. The Cubs now sit at 5-2 on the season with a big early season matchup on Monday against Flintridge Prep. Based on early season results, it looks like Prep, Providence, and Mayfield are the class of the Prep League, so Monday's game will be a solid test for the Cubs.
On Monday this week, we had a Letter of Intent signing for two superb Cub athletes. Congratulations to Sade Falese ’23 who will be participating in Track & Field for Cornell University and Holly Gmelich ‘23 who will be Swimming for Washington University in St. Louis!
For the first time this season, all four spring sports are in action this week. The week began on Tuesday with the swim team traveling to Westwood for a non-league meet with Marymount HS. The Cubs came away with a sweep as the Varsity team won 100-70, led by individual race wins from Kate Georgino '25 (100 Fly & 100 Back), Zoe Chiu '26 (100 Free), and Marcella Laguna '23 (100 Breaststroke). The JV Aquacubs were even more impressive, winning 112-11, sweeping all 10 events on the day. Both teams improved to 2-0 and will head down Orange Grove to take on new Prep League foe Maranatha this Tuesday.
While the athletics calendar says that spring has sprung, the weather forecast has wreaked havoc on the Cubs calendar this week. Both the Swimming and Track invitationals scheduled for tomorrow have been canceled due to the impending storm coming through southern California. The Softball game that was originally scheduled for Thursday afternoon was played a day early, just to beat the rain coming through town. A few competitions were able to be held in the cold and windy conditions this week. The Softball team played both Flintridge Sacred Heart and Sacred Heart of Los Angeles at home this week—splitting the two games. FSHA got the better of Mayfield in Tuesday's non-league game. The game was tight for four innings before the Tologs pulled away late for a 10-2 win. The victory gives FSHA a 503 lead in the Rivalry Series during the 2022-2023 school year with just Swimming/Diving and Track/Field remaining on the schedule. The Cubs will have to win both matchups to tie the Series 5-5 and hold onto the streak. It has been four years since FSHA has defeated Mayfield in the Series, but the Tologs are on the verge after the big softball win. Thankfully the Cubs got right back out on the field on Wednesday with a win of 8-5 over Sacred Heart of LA. Mayfield's record now stands at 2-2 and the Cubs will begin the search for their 1st Prep League title since 2018 next week against Westridge.
