Soccer season ends with valiant playoff effort and spring sports kick off

It may have been Valentine's Day Eve, but there was certainly no love lost last night as the Cubs traveled to take on the Torrance Tartars in the first round of the CIF Division 4 soccer playoffs.
Led by last week's Athlete of the Week, Chloe Powell '21, the Cubs played one of their finest matches of the year against the top-10 ranked Torrance squad but, in the end, the stellar defense of the Tartars was too much for the Cubs. The game was well played and even throughout, but a late first-half goal followed by an early second-half goal pushed the Tartars to a 2-0 win, ending the Cubs’ season. After their best Prep League finish in over 20 years, the future looks very bright for Cubs soccer. Coaches Lachlan Cameron and Calum Torrie will bring back the majority of their team next year, including nine of 11 starters, and the Cubs will look to improve on their second place league finish and CIF playoff berth.
The winter season is officially over for Mayfield—it’s time to celebrate! Today’s the deadline to RSVP for next week’s Winter Sports Banquet. Now we turn our attention to the four spring sports, which promise to have exciting results. Badminton has many returning players from last year's playoff team and will undoubtedly improve with two new top coaches. Softball made a run to the CIF Semifinals in 2019 and should be a force once again—their season starts tomorrow with the San Marino Tournament. Swim & Dive has a number of new talented freshmen and, with a very highly regarded sophomore transfer, look to win their first league title in seven years. Lastly, Track & Field has won five consecutive Prep League championships and are poised to make it six after graduating only two members from its 2019 title team. The Spring season should be quite fruitful for the Cubs...come on out and cheer on the best teams around!
Go Cubs!
