On Tuesday the Cubs traveled to take on league rival Westridge and the Cubs battled throughout. Neither team led by more than two goals at any point, but the Cubs maintained a suffocating defense to come away with their first league win of the year, 8-6, over the Tigers. Then, yesterday, the Cubs traveled to La Canada to take on FSHA in the latest chapter of our Rivalry Series, which the Tologs won last year, 6-4.
After jumping out to an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter, the Cubs looked like they would cruise to an easy victory. But, just like the golf and tennis rivalry matches came down to the wire, the Tologs stormed back and tied the match at 6-6 after three quarters. With the stellar work in goal by Audrey Bland ’20 and the offensive prowess of Kate Thompson ’22, the Cubs outscored FSHA 5-2 in the final quarter to earn an 11-8 win on the road. Mayfield now leads the 2019-20 Rivalry Series 4-1 with wins in cross country, golf, tennis, and water polo.
The busy soccer team continued their early-season success by going 1-0-1 this week, defeating Westridge, 3-0, yesterday and playing South Pasadena to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday. Nadia O'Reilly ’20 came back strong from an injury that kept her out for two weeks by scoring two goals in yesterday's big league win over the Tigers. Westridge was the CIF runner-up last season and is usually a thorn in the Cubs’ side, so the win yesterday was especially sweet. The Cubs improved to 7-1-4 (2-0 in Prep League play) and will rest today before playing two more games tomorrow in the prestigious Best in the West tournament at Westminster High School.
The basketball team took this week off from games after playing nine games in 12 days. The Cubs end their first half of the season with an important league game tomorrow at home against Providence at 3:00 p.m. (JV) and 4:30 p.m.(V). We hope to see you in the gym!
All three teams will continue to work over the break to get ready for the big league push in January. The calendar year will end with two special games next Saturday, Dec. 28
, when we invite our wonderful alums back for some friendly competition. Basketball hosts their alumnae game at 10:00 a.m.
in the gym, and soccer hosts our former Cubs athletes
a few hours later at 2:00 p.m.
at Occidental College. Both games brought out dozens of alums last year and we are expecting an even bigger turnout in 2019. When you need a break from the holiday craziness, come cheer on your favorite alums and the Cubs as they compete in these fun exhibition games!
Merry Christmas from the Athletic Department. Our Cubs athletes are certainly appreciative of our Mayfield family. We hope all of you enjoy a chance to take some time off and celebrate with your families.
