Busy weeks for winter athletes as Cross Country brings it home at CIF State

The Cubs winter sports teams have been some of the busiest athletes in the San Gabriel Valley—we’ve already seen many exciting basketball, soccer, and water polo games. Soccer has continued its hot start and is the highest scoring team in the CIF Southern Section, with 37 goals in wins over Glendale, La Canada, Maranatha, and Providence.
Mayfield met its match in a 2-0 loss last night to Campbell Hall, but the Cubs are off to a terrific start at 4-1-1. The Varsity team has two more non-league matches next week before competing in one of the largest soccer tournaments in the nation—the Best in the West Tournament, hosted by Newport Harbor HS—on Dec. 14 and 21. The JV Red and White teams also are off and running. JV Red defeated Cantwell and Village Christian handily and JV White takes on South Pasadena and Palmdale Aerospace Academy over the next few days.

Varsity basketball has had an up and down start to the season. Despite being beset by injuries—the Cubs had four starters out of the game last night—the team picked up early season wins over Monrovia, Mountain View, and Louisville. Their record stands at 3-3 as they open Prep League play this afternoon against Chadwick in the Cubs Cave at 4:00 p.m. JV is enjoying a terrific start to the 2019-20 campaign. Led by Coach Malissa Balderama ’09, the Cubs are 4-1 and are improving with each game.

Water polo is also coached by an alum—Ellie Karl ’15 has returned to guide the program that she was an instrumental part of during her years at Mayfield. The team, with an unusual mix of mostly seniors and freshmen, has enjoyed early season success with wins over Webb, San Marino, and Hoover. The Cubs host league rival La Salle on Tuesday at Flintridge Prep.

Last week’s highlight was the cross country team's stunning performance at the California State Championships in Fresno. While most of us were still in a tryptophan coma, the girls headed up through the snowy Grapevine and competed at the state finals for a sixth consecutive year. And, for a sixth consecutive year, the Cubs finished in the top 10 in the Division 4 race. Last year's state champion, Audrey Suarez ’21, had another great race, finishing third among over 230 runners. Her teammates, Emma Cadena ’20, Cameron Gomez ’20, Mercedes Javalera ’22, Maggie Kiechler ’20, Cecilia Kvochak ’23, and Sophia Serrano ’21, combined to finish sixth in the state—an unbelievable performance! And this weekend, Audrey will once again represent Mayfield in the Foot Locker West Regionals. Good luck, Audrey!

The coming weeks will continue to be busy for the Cubs as basketball and soccer compete in tournaments and water polo plays some important league matches and an exciting Rivalry Series game up at FSHA on Dec. 19. Mark your calendars—for the first time ever, all three winter sports will host Alumnae Games over Christmas break. Please spread the word to our alums and come out to cheer on our Cubs teams and our brave alums who come back to compete against them! Here are the details:
