About the Math Placement Exams
Mayfield’s Math Department uses diagnostic exams to place each student according to her readiness. Please note that high school Algebra and Geometry courses are more rigorous than junior high classes, and should not be considered repeat courses.
All students must take the Algebra Readiness exam, and may elect to take the additional Geometry Readiness exam.
Students who want to be considered for skipping Algebra and starting with Geometry or Advanced Geometry must take the Geometry Readiness diagnostic.
Parents must log into their iMSS account by April 20 to indicate that their daughter will take the optional Geometry exam.
World Languages Placement Exam
Students who have studied a world language in middle school or who speak a world language are strongly encouraged to take the placement exam in order to be considered for a higher-level course in French, Latin, Mandarin or Spanish.
Parents must log into their iMSS account by April 20 to indicate which language exam their daughter will take.
— Melissa Tighe, Math Department Chair
No matter which class a student begins with, there is a path to our most advanced math course by senior year, and often our top students in that course begin in the 9th-grade Algebra I course.
