The Ed and Mary Shea family's affiliation with Mayfield Senior School reaches back more than twenty-five years. In 1978, Ed Shea joined the Board, and served as a trustee while his daughters Mary, Maureen and Ellen attended Mayfield. His tenure lasted until 1986, and during this time he greatly supported and encouraged the growth of the school. Daughter Mary Shea McConnell '81 also served on the Board from 2000-2006. The family's commitment to Mayfield also includes an endowed full-tuition scholarship, created in honor of Maureen Mary Shea. Known as the Maureen Mary Shea Memorial Scholarship, it provides full tuition for a Mayfield senior, and was established in the fall of 1985 after a car accident claimed Maureen's life at the beginning of her senior year. When Maureen passed away, the Sheas were beset with queries from friends, "What can we do to help?" Maureen's six siblings (Colleen, Ed, Mary, Tim, Katie and Ellen) decided almost immediately that funds could be collected into an endowed scholarship for a Mayfield senior who captured Maureen's essence - an athlete who was easy-going, loving, fun, and carefree yet hardworking.
The award is granted annually to a member of the incoming senior class who best exemplifies those qualities which made Maureen a valued member of the Mayfield community: involvement in student activities, participation in athletics, demonstration of responsible leadership, commitment to friends and family, and putting forth one's best effort in meeting academic and personal challenges. The recipient is chosen by the faculty and administration in the spring preceding her senior year, and is presented at Mayfield's annual Academic Awards Night.
