Mayfield was greatly saddened by the tragic death of former Board Chair David Haber, who was killed in November 2002 in a traffic accident in Mexico. Dave was survived by his wife Marge, son Dave, and daughters Peggy Haber Knauf ’91 and Kathleen Haber ’96. We will always remember Dave’s warm spirit and his dedication as a husband, father, community leader and trustee.
Dave’s association with Mayfield began in 1987 when Peggy entered as a freshman. He served on the Board from 1990-1999, and was Board Chair from 1993-1996. He also chaired the Development Committee and the Capital Campaign for the Sister Mary Wilfrid Gymnasium. Dave was a key player in the strategic planning process that began in 1995 and resulted in the five-year plan Envisioning 2001, published in September 1996.
Dave, a partner at Knapp, Petersen and Clarke, was a respected trial lawyer in civil products defense. Volunteer activities included membership on the Verdugo Hills Boy Scout Council Executive Board and teaching CCD confirmation classes at Holy Family Church.
Dave was committed to supporting the education of young women in need of financial assistance. To honor this legacy and to keep his spirit alive at Mayfield Senior School, the Board has established the David C. Haber Scholarship Fund.
