What are these students artists’ ‘impressions’ of Mayfield?

The use of vivid colors and broad brush strokes characterizes the work of AP Studio Art and Visual Arts Conservatory students, who have recently focused on the Impressionist movement in their “Impressions of Mayfield” series on display in the Student Commons.
The seniors in AP Studio Art painted self-portraits and Visual Arts Conservatory painted architecture and nature.

As part of the Primavera Visual Art & Film Festival, Drawing & Painting students will exhibit their trois crayon charcoal drawings, expressive watercolor paintings, and challenging perspective drawings. Art & Design students have designed superheroes with extraordinary abilities to serve humanity and will model components of their body-mapped protective clothing in a fashion show.

“Students have grown in terms of bravely taking risks to explore the potential of various artistic mediums through trial and error,” said Theresia Kleeman, Visual Arts instructor.

“Learning from mistakes creates happy accidents in the Art Studio and all students should be proud of their growth flowing from this experience.”

Allia Al-Darmaki ’17 of AP Studio Art said that after exploring ideas of Impressionism she created a loose self-portrait of herself.

“The unstructured brush strokes, paired with the array of colors, form movement throughout the piece,” she said. “This loose approach to art is very different from my usual style. However, this break in my tradition allowed me to paint more expressively.”
