The arts are in bloom this Spring at Mayfield!

Our dancers, actors, musicians, visual artists, writers, and theatre tech experts delighted Mayfield audiences with their Spring productions and exhibits.
On March 17-19, the Theatre and Theatre Tech Conservatories presented the musical QUILTERS, a heartwarming, spiritual look into the lives of American pioneer women, with stories told through song, dance and live music—a very fitting musical theatre tribute for Women's History Month!

In mid-April, a small group of Instrumental Music Conservatory performers gave an intimate Chamber Music Recital of instrumental solos and small group pieces in the Strub Hall Living Room. Our student musicians showcased a variety of genres, from classical to popular, in preparation for their Music in May concert.

This year's annual Spring Dance Concert, BLOOM, was a vibrant and uplifting celebration of dance! As dance teacher Denise Leitner explained, this year's show, which ran from April 21-23, allowed dancers to let their talent bloom on stage with the assistance of many wonderful professional and student choreographers of all genres. Watch this video to hear Leitner reflect on her first year as Director of the Dance Conservatory.

The PRIMAVERA Visual Arts & Film Festival on Tuesday, April 26 represented all our fine arts classes as well as the Visual Arts Conservatory program for a night of drawing, design, film, fashion, photography and more. Congratulations to our talented Mayfield student artists (all 140+ of them!) who presented their impressive paintings, drawings, photos, short films, paper hat "sculptures" and more. Be sure to stop by the Turner Center Gallery if you missed it! A special collection of our senior students' work is also on display in the Strub Hall Gallery.

The annual Creative Writing Reading on Friday, April 29 featured the poetry, short fiction and essays of our award-winning student writers, whose work is collated in the Creative Writing Conservatory's annual Colophon publication. That same night, Mallory Neithart '16 directed this year's final theatre showcase, which saw senior students stage the 1999 Friends episode called "The One With Ross's Denial."

SAVE THE DATE! We are kicking off the 2016-17 theatre season early by hosting two performances of As You Like It as part of Cal Poly Pomona's Southern California Shakespeare Festival! There will be two shows in Pike Auditorium on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17. These productions are part of an Equity contract and are each limited to 99 seats, so stay tuned for how to buy tickets for these on-campus performances—we will let you know when the Box Office opens! Four Mayfield Senior School students have been selected as interns for the festival production—Abby Holtz '19, Emma Gilliland '19, and Dominique Jakowec '19 will be assisting with tech and Avery Arroyo '19 will have a role in the production. (Theatre teacher Sam Robinson will be playing the role of Jaques—a character famous for his "seven ages of man speech," which begins "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players.")

The Theatre Conservatory will follow this season opener with two classic productions—Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare in November 2016 and The Crucible by Arthur Miller in March 2017.
