Mayfield community supports "Project Cambodia" to the tune of $7,000

With the support of the Mayfield Senior School community, students have raised more than $7,000 for the Sprouting Knowledge Orphanage in Battambang, Cambodia.
A group of 10 Mayfield students, accompanied by Assistant Head of School Mary Mansell and Director of Athletics Lynda Gilbert, departed for Cambodia today on a 10-day service immersion trip with generous gifts and donations for the orphanage. The money will be used to purchase, among other things, bicycles for the children.

"For these children, the transportation flexibility provided by a $30 bike can ensure further education and future employment," explains Mansell.

Students raised almost $4,000 in cash, through activities including a special fundraising swim meet, a bake sale, and online donations. This was matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor.

Students also collected so many toys for the children at the orphanage that each of the 10 students had one extra suitcase full of toys. They also collected a full suitcase of yarn to spend time knitting with the children. Over several days at the orphanage, students will be teaching English, playing sports, and fishing with the children.

Before they arrive at the orphanage, located in the countryside outside Battambang, students will first participate in a conference on rural development at the University of Battambang and meet government ministers.
