With the Advent season upon us, we are reminded that:
They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength,
They will soar as with eagles’ wings;
They will run and not grow weary,
Walk and not grow faint
(Isa 40:31)
Surely the image of the Holy Child touches us most particularly at this time. The Child comes to us to fulfill the promise of God’s love by living among us. In doing so we are shown the Incarnate God and the power of faith and redemption. The message of the Christmas season is both simple and profound. The simplicity of the babe in the manger and the profound mystery of divinity are inextricably interwoven. This message renews our strength and enables us to soar on eagle’s wings and not grow weary.
In recent months the economic challenges placed before us as a nation have dashed the hopes of many and we have become weary with the news of continued troubles across the country and the world. Each of us in our own way has been touched by the downturn in the economy and the uncertainty and anxiety that has arisen. These are difficult times but like many challenges in life we find ourselves returning to the things that matter most.
At the Christmas season, let us remember the gifts that we have been given and the gifts we have to share. This is the time to reach out to one another and to ask for the support we need and to share all that we can offerfaith, friendship and the joy of the season. In doing so, we bring the Christ Child into our hearts and our homes and we proclaim that God lives and acts in us and in our world. Let us rejoice together in the Divine Presence.
In conclusion I would like to share some of the Christmas wishes my History of World Religions class shared at a prayer service they created in celebration of the season.
- “I wish everyone happiness, love and friendship in life.”
- “I wish for love and meaning in life.”
- “My wish for everyone in the world is to have someone who cares about them so they know they are loved.”
- “I wish that everyone in the world can love and respect one another and I wish everyone could be happy.”
- “I wish that we all live in compassion and peace and not forget the poor and poor in spirit who need our love and compassion.”
And, in that spirit, I wish you and your families Peace and Joy throughout the Christmas season and in the New Year.
Yours in Christ,

Rita Curasi McBride
