CUBS NEWS November2nd, 2009
It’s hard to believe that the fall season is over, well almost! Tennis finished the season playing well against Poly but losing 6-12. The team really pulled together during the second half of the season and showed a steady improvement. Congratulations to our Golf Captain, Mary Spohn, who competed with honor in the CIF Southern Section Freelance Golf Tournament at Rio Hondo Country Club. There was a quality field, competing in difficult, extremely windy conditions on a course Mary had NEVER played. She may not have made one of the 4 qualifying spots, but after a tough start she rebounded to prove that she can compete at that level. Her Dad and Coach Kevin had the pleasure of seeing Mary make one of the rare pars at the difficult 18th. The Volleyball teams Swept Westridge and JV & F/S played great games against Maranatha, F/S holding on to their undefeated record for the season. Only 2 more league games to go! The Cross Country team did us proud on Saturday at Pierce College. Both the JV and Varsity girls ran under ideal conditions producing many personal best times of the season. We placed second overall in both divisions to Chadwick and now go on to represent Mayfield at the CIF-SS Prelims in 2 weeks. Charlotte Anderson won the JV division in a new record time of 20:36 and Michelle Gonzales came in second in the varsity section with a personal best time of 18:59. Karina Alvarez, one of 3 freshman on the team, placed 4th with her personal best time of 19:18. Thank you to all the athletes who came out to assist and support. A very big Thank you to “Cubby” for your encouragement and support. To see you running next to Amanda was inspiring!
