The Social Studies Department, in accordance with the Goals of the Holy Child Schools, is committed to developing informed, caring and contributing members of society. The curriculum is designed to help students develop an appreciation of and a respect for varying human cultures and civilizations, and to provide an understanding of the connections between past events and the present.

All social studies courses emphasize the reading, writing and critical thinking skills necessary to develop informed and independent thought, while the integration of technology into the curriculum further aids students’ ability to deal with an ever-changing world.

Students take at least three years of social studies courses, including one year of World History, one year of U.S. History or AP U.S. History, one semester of U.S. Government and one semester of Economics.

A rich variety of elective offerings provides additional perspective on human behavior and the diversity of historical experience.

“Our required college prep curriculum is designed to be intellectually challenging and to foster academic excellence, but what enhances that, and makes our program of study creative, is the diversity of our elective offerings, our guest speakers, field trips, working at the polls, conducting online student voter registration drives, and engaging our students in learning outside the classroom. Most especially, the program is enhanced by our committed teachers, all of whom bring a variety of experiences and interests to Mayfield and all of whom truly enjoy what they do.”
