The Science Department strives to give students a foundation in both the physical and natural sciences and deepen critical thinking skills. Our students gain an awareness of scientific concepts through many cooperative laboratory activities, as well as teacher demonstrations and discussions of current scientific trends. The laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art tools such as electrophoretic gel boxes for DNA study and PASCO computer stations which aid students not only in collecting and analyzing data, but in gaining skills using college-level materials.
While Mayfield has a two-year science requirement for graduation, a majority of the students take three, if not four, years of study. Our students’ interest in science can be further seen in their co-curricular activities. Our physics classes have competed and won trophies in the American Society of Civil Engineers Student Popsicle-Stick Bridge Building Competition.
We also have an active Science Club, which visits local science exhibits and lectures. Some of our students even extend their science interest into their summers, doing research at local universities or attending programs such as Notre Dame’s Introduction to Engineering, the Summer Science Program in Astronomy, and Caltech’s Science Scholars Program.
Mayfield science students typically excel in national exams, including AP Biology, AP Physics and the SAT subject exams.
