The goal of the Religious Studies Department is to give Mayfield students an overview of the essentials of the Catholic faith. Each student, regardless of her own faith experience, takes religion courses each year. The ninth grade curriculum begins with an introduction to Catholic Christianity and church history, moving in tenth grade to scripture study of both the Old and New Testaments. As students mature, social justice and morality are presented in the eleventh grade, while the twelfth graders take the History of World Religions and Introduction to Philosophy. The challenges of womanhood in belief, a “want of the age,” are met in Women’s Spirituality, a seminar offered to seniors.

At Mayfield, this academic approach is balanced with the Christian Service Program, consisting of liturgies and service activities where students learn to live the motto of a Holy Child School, “Actions Not Words.” Students actively involve themselves in a wide variety of service projects, becoming real community leaders in schools, hospitals and other service organizations during their Mayfield years. The Program builds awareness and compassion, and teaches the value of a lifelong commitment to helping others.

“Belief is a gift that invites further reflection. Reflection seeks information – presented in our Religious Studies curriculum. Beyond, above and deeper than a curriculum is the underlying mystery of Christ’s reality, that this God Person came that persons ’may have life and have it more abundantly.’”
