Mayfield students have a unique opportunity to study mathematics in an integrated format that combines the areas of geometry, algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus over the course of three years, instead of isolating the subjects from year to year. This system enables all our students to study calculus in their senior year. While Mayfield has a three-year math requirement, over ninety percent of students elect to take a fourth year of math and begin their study of calculus. Our inclusive program has also enabled our honors students to score consistently exemplary marks on the AP Calculus AB and BC exams. Our students routinely enjoy internships at UCLA and Caltech, as well as acceptance into prestigious summer work/study programs.

Mayfield strives to meet the needs of all our math students. We offer daily tutoring labs for freshmen, summer math review programs in a group or one-on-one setting, and we utilize technology to customize reviews for students who need extra practice, as well as accelerated learning for students wishing to move ahead. Highly accelerated students have the opportunity to study thermodynamics.

“Our Math Department tries to bring in problems from the real world. For example, after the Columbia accident we calculated how fast the foam insulation could have struck the wing of the orbiter.”
