The Foreign Language Department of Mayfield Senior School offers three languages, French, Latin and Spanish, up to and including the AP level in all three. Spanish provides the choice of an AP Language course as well as an AP Literature course. A Spanish III Honors course prepares students for the AP levels in that language. The faculty stresses the four goals of listening, writing, speaking (in French and Spanish) and reading.

Every student is required to take three years of one language or two years of two languages; many students choose to go on to a fourth level as an elective. The Department proudly recognizes the fact that between ten to fifteen students routinely enroll in two languages concurrently and encourages those who enjoy language to do so.

Teachers take students on field trips to museums as well as to musical and theatrical performances to enhance their study. Mayfield’s Foreign Language students typically excel in national exams, including the AP French Language, AP Latin: Virgil, AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, National French Contest, National Latin Examination and National Spanish Examination.

“We introduce students to the discipline of learning a new language and offer them the chance to get acquainted with new cultures from a variety of perspectives and approaches. We hope to provide them with a strong foundation for their university language studies.”
