The arts have been an integral part of Holy Child schools since the founding of the first Mayfield School in England over 150 years ago. Every student takes classes in the arts as part of the required curriculum. All Fine Arts classes are technique oriented to provide the knowledge and framework necessary for individual expression. The classes follow the California State Teaching Standards for Arts Education.
Mayfield offers daily Fine Arts courses in the areas of choreography, dance, design, instrumental music, photography, theatre, visual arts, and vocal music. Per new UC regulations, students are required to take a foundation level arts course before entering an intermediate level course or the more advanced Conservatory for the Arts program. In the Conservatory program each student is encouraged to develop her own unique creativity while pursuing AP portfolios, performance opportunities and exhibitions. Courses of study offered during Conservatory hours are Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Photography, Theatre, Visual Arts and Vocal Music.
Part of the Fine Arts tradition at Mayfield is Arts Weekend. During this time, regular classes are suspended and Saturday classes added so that students may attend special workshops provided by visiting artists from the Los Angeles area. The entire student body and faculty participate.
Other arts events during the year include the fall and spring Theatre productions, Carol Night, the spring Dance Concert, the spring Music Concert, the annual fall and spring Art Exhibits and the spring Creative Writing Reading.
